Marzia Babakarkhail is a former family court judge from Afghanistan, a women’s rights advocate, public speaker, author, and respected community leader in the United Kingdom. She studied Law and Sharia at Kabul University and received judicial training through the Supreme Court of Afghanistan. From 1991 to 1998, she served as a family court judge in Baghlan Province, where she worked to uphold justice, human rights, and the rights of women and vulnerable communities. In 1994, Marzia founded the Afghan Women’s Social and Cultural Organisation to support and empower Afghan women. She also established a school for girls and boys while living in Pakistan and served with the Afghan NGO Coordination Bureau, including as Chair of its Women’s Committee. Due to her advocacy for women’s rights, education, and social justice, Marzia was targeted by the Taliban and was forced to leave Afghanistan. After settling in the United Kingdom, she rebuilt her life, learned English, supported refugee communities, and continued her commitment to public service and human rights advocacy. As a member of the Board of Directors of Banoo Foundation, Marzia brings more than three decades of experience in law, women’s empowerment, community development, advocacy, and leadership. Her expertise, dedication, and lifelong commitment to advancing the rights of women and girls provide valuable guidance to the Foundation’s mission of creating opportunities, promoting inclusion, and empowering Afghan women and girls to build brighter futures.
