Somaya Faruqi is an engineer, advocate, and former captain of the Afghan Girls Robotics Team. She has represented Afghanistan in 17 international robotics competitions across 12 countries and has been recognized globally for her leadership in STEM, girls’ education, and women’s empowerment. Her achievements include being named to the BBC 100 Women list, Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia, and Vogue’s 21 Under 21. Somaya currently serves as a Global Champion for Education Cannot Wait (ECW), the United Nations global fund for education in emergencies. She is also the founder of the #AfghanGirlsVoices campaign, a global initiative that has reached millions of people and helped raise awareness and support for Afghan girls’ access to education. She recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from California State University, Sacramento, where she was recognized as the Outstanding Student of the College of Engineering and Computer Science. As a member of the Board of Directors of Banoo Foundation, Somaya brings expertise in engineering, innovation, education advocacy, youth leadership, and global engagement. Her experience amplifying the voices of Afghan girls, advancing opportunities in STEM, and advocating for equal access to education strengthens the Foundation’s mission to empower women and girls through education, awareness, and community-driven initiatives. Her leadership and international perspective provide valuable guidance as Banoo Foundation works to create lasting opportunities and positive change for Afghan women and girls.
